Alright, everything I say, I must ask won't be taken as offensive in any way. As an artist myself I would hate to offend another artist...this is just how I see it. :)
I feel like the stringy bits in the right side of the picture could be octopus tentacles...which then makes me think that the blue is the sea, and the white bits are the clouds are being reflected in the ocean blue (or white foam). Now the vibrant colours on the left side make me wonder if the wavy black line is part of a shipwreck and the red is flames and the orange is also flames, or...if it isn't a shipwreck, the rainbow colours could represent more sea creatures, fish and the likes...and the dark black in the corner represents the deep parts of the ocean.
Or...on a separate note, I think this could also represent the soul. The blue for the void of mystery in which the soul is shrouded and the angels could represent the heavenly parts of the soul that are our morals and beliefs, and around that area the blue is very light and airy. However on the other side is the mixture of colours which could be pain or it could be happiness as well, however with the black in the corner I feel like it would be the darker part of the soul...and the little square bits, could be the windows in our souls that open up to certain drastic life changing events.
My opinion, or my views on this painting. :) However, do tell your mother that she has done a gorgeous job with the mixed media, I really like it! :)
